Abstract
The promoting effect of cobalt, or nickel, on the HDS activity of the molybdate catalyst has been the subject of a number of theories. However, the role of the promoter on the acidity, activation and deactivation of the catalyst has not been completely clarified. In this work, the surface acidity and activity of fresh and used, unpromoted and promoted molybdate catalysts are examined. It is found that both strong Lewis and strong Bronsted acid sites are active for HDS. The former are mainly present in the sulfide promoted catalyst, and the latter in the oxidic unpromoted catalyst.
