Summary
Currently, with the declaration of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, forest landscape restoration is gaining significant attention, as it not only allows for the recovery of the ecological functions of ecosystems but also aims to improve the well-being of human populations embedded within the landscape. At both national and international levels, various landscape restoration strategies are being implemented; however, there is a lack of information regarding the most viable indicators to monitor the ecological and socioeconomic benefits being pursued.
This project focuses on generating ecological and socioeconomic indicators for monitoring restoration processes at different scales (plot and farm). To achieve this, national and international experts and local actors involved in restoration practices will be consulted. Additionally, a field validation process will be carried out at a pilot site in Loja canton, where restoration actions will take place.
The proposal aims to provide a monitoring protocol that can be used in different restoration projects and adapted to the context of the landscapes where the projects are implemented. In this regard, this research is a contribution to the Ecuadorian academic community and restoration practitioners. Furthermore, the field validation of the indicators will allow for the creation of a baseline that can be used by site managers for informed decision-making regarding land use and spatial planning.
