Summary

The project "Strengthening the Kichwa Amazonian Chakra of the Atacapi Community" aims to recover, strengthen, and enhance this ancestral agricultural management system to improve food security, the local economy, and environmental conservation in the Ecuadorian Amazon region. The Kichwa Amazonian chakras face various challenges, such as limited use of technology, low food security, reliance on alternatives for biological control, and lack of knowledge about pests and diseases of native bees.

The project proposes a comprehensive action plan that includes: Initial evaluation of the chakra's status: soil characterization, identification of plant species, and analysis of their food potential. Evaluation of bioinputs for improving seedling growth in nurseries: preparation and evaluation of a bioinput based on compost and microorganisms. Evaluation of pest incidence in native bees: identification of pests, characterization of managed bee species, and development of management strategies. Implementation of a pilot planning model at the chakra scale: selection of pilot plots, spatial mapping, collection of biophysical and socioeconomic data, ecological and socioeconomic zoning, and establishment of demonstration systems.

The direct beneficiaries are the inhabitants of the Atacapi community, with improvements in food security: increased production of nutritious and diversified foods with scientific analysis, environmental conservation, and potential production improvements through the use of bioinputs and biodiversity protection.

General Objective

Contribute to sustainable agricultural transformation through research in the Amazonian chakra and management of wild species in the Kichwa community of Atacapi to scale food security, biodiversity conservation, and the well-being of the people.

Specific Objectives

1. Conduct an initial assessment of the *chakra*’s condition based on the physicochemical characterization of the soil and plant species.
2. Evaluate a bio-input for enhancing seedling growth in the nursery—starting from seeds—for the Amazonian *chakra*.
3. Assess the incidence of pests affecting native bees to develop management alternatives, and taxonomically characterize the managed native bee species present in the *chakras*.
4. Implement a pilot planning model at the *chakra* scale—using selected agro-ecosystems—that enables the efficient allocation of land for productive uses and conservation zones.
